William LeGrand Whitley

MURFREESBORO – William LeGrand Whitley, 87, died Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at his home in Murfreesboro.  He had been preceded in death by his wife, Marietta Kenney Whitley; parents, Joseph B. and Mary Waff Whitley; and three brothers, Joseph B. Whitley, Stanley W. Whitley, and Horace B. Whitley.

A native of Hertford County he was retired from the United States Postal Service serving 25 years as Post Master in Murfreesboro and 10 years as Postal Sectional Manager in Greensboro.  Also, he served in the United States Army during World War II achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant.  His memberships included Murfreesboro Baptist Church as a lifelong member, a 60 year charter member of the Murfreesboro Exchange Club, and member of the Murfreesboro Historical Association.

Survivors include one daughter, Rita Whitley Burgess and husband, Troy, of Murfreesboro; two grandchildren, Melissa B. Williams and husband, Rod, of Raleigh and Patrick L. Burgess of Raleigh; two great grandchildren, Kasey Burgess of Murfreesboro and Hannah B, Williams of Raleigh; one brother, Clarence Whitley of Richmond, VA; and one sister, Mary Elizabeth Snead of Powells Point.

The family received friends at Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc. in Conway on Saturday, November 12 and a funeral service for Mr. Whitley was held Sunday, November 13, 2011 in Murfreesboro Baptist Church with Dr. Lee Canipe presiding. Burial with Military Honors followed at Riverside Cemetery in Murfreesboro.
