Thomas Mizell “Tom” Urquhart

AHOSKIE – Thomas Mizell “Tom” Urquhart of Ahoskie died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at age 88.

A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church,424 West Church Street, Ahoskie.  The family will receive friends at the Urquhart home in Ahoskie after the service.

Tom Urquhart was born October 11, 1923 inWoodville,NC, the son of the late Burges Urquhart and Emily Mizell Urquhart.  He was a graduate of Virginia Episcopal School inLynchburg,Virginiaand a 1949 graduate of theUniversityofNorth CarolinaatChapel Hill, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity and the wrestling team.  He served in the U.S. Army Supply Corps during World War II in the South Pacific Theater.

A certified public accountant from 1960 until his retirement in 1989, he was a partner in Riddick and Urquhart, CPA.  He was a member of the Ahoskie Rotary Club and the Ahoskie Chamber of Commerce and served on the vestry of St. Thomas Episcopal Church.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased in death by his wife, Betsey Derr Urquhart, and a brother, Burges Urquhart III.  He is survived by a daughter, Betsey Derr Urquhart; a son, Thomas Mizell Urquhart, Jr.; a sister, Emily Urquhart Ayscue and her husband, E. Osborne Ayscue, Jr. of Charlotte; and numerous nieces and nephews.
