William Howard Doughtie

WINTON –  William Howard Doughtie, 89, of Winton died November 5, 2011 in Ahoskie at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital with his family by his side.

Mr. Doughtie was born in Hertford County and was the son of Cola William Doughtie and Willie Leggett Doughtie. He graduated from Ahoskie High School, served in the US Navy for six years and returned home to become a farmer.

He married Genevieve Baker on May 30, 1947 and was happily married for 55 years until her death in 2002. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

He was a member of Winton Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher and deacon for many years. He was a member of Winton Masonic Lodge 0723.

Preceding him in death are his wife, Genevieve Baker Doughtie; and brothers, Raymond Doughtie, Cola Doughtie and Ray Doughtie.

Mr. Doughtie is survived by his three daughters, Elaine Coburn (husband, Ronald), of Winton, Betty Jones of Aulander and Janet Scott (husband, Hal) of Winton; a sister, Barbara White (husband, Scarborough); seven grandchildren, Forrest White, Jana Pierce (husband, Adal), Will Jones, Verble Jones (wife, Kim), Mark Coburn, Farrah Hampton (husband, Mitch) and Lanie Scott; six great grandchildren, Logan Whitfield, Kirsten Baggett, Breanna Coburn, Daymon Baggett, Evan Hampton, and Lon Pierce, and ten nieces and nephews.

Special thanks goes to Nancy Wall, a dear and faithful friend, Dr. Semaan Khoury, the members of Winton Baptist Church, Rebecca Perry, and all the staff and friends at Brian Center in Windsor.

Funeral services were held on Monday, November 7, 2011 at Winton Baptist Church with the Rev. Joseph Futrell officiating. Interment will follow in Stoney Creek Cemetery, Ahoskie.

The family will receive friends at the home of Hal and Janet Scott of Winton.
