WINDSOR – Less than one month on the job, Bertie High School Principal Carson Watford has been suspended.

The Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald learned of the alleged suspension earlier this week, but was unable to gain confirmation until Wednesday.

In an email sent late Wednesday morning to this newspaper, Rod Malone, the attorney to the Bertie County Board of Education, said Watford was suspended, with pay, effective Oct. 19.

No details were provided as to what caused the suspension or when Watford might possibility resume his job as the school’s top educational administrator.

“I am not able to provide any additional information regarding the matter,” Malone wrote in his email.

Chief Academic Officer Deborah Carroll and a team of high school administrators are overseeing the day-to-day administrative duties at BHS in Watford’s absence, according to information provided by a Bertie County Public Schools official.

Watford was named in August as Bertie High School’s new principal. He was unable to move into his new job until Sept. 28 after fulfilling his obligations as principal of Hertford County Middle School.
