Hey there Hawks fans!

It’s Homecoming week at CU.  The football team is playing Shaw University on Saturday at 6 p.m. and we want to see you all there!

As I’ve mentioned in previous columns, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee is running a campus and community-wide canned food drive to benefit the Rich Square W.S. Creecy Training and Community Center.  A percentage of the profits from Saturday’s game will be donated to the center, and we want to raise as much money as possible for this cause.

In addition, officers from the Student Athlete Advisory Committee will be presenting a check at halftime to the owners of the Creecy Center.  Please come support the football team and the Creecy Center on Saturday by coming to the game at 6:00!

The Chowan University Athletic Department is hosting this year’s CIAA Action Academy on Monday.  The Student Athlete Advisory Committee welcomes SAAC representatives from Elizabeth City State and Virginia State for an afternoon discussing behavior intervention techniques with the program Step-Up.

It’s been a pretty exciting week for CU sports.

The Chowan Women’s Cross Country team competed in their first ever CIAA Championship on Thursday in Cary, North Carolina.  As a team, they finished in eighth place out of twelve teams, and rookie Gerlisa Shipman led the way for the Hawks with a 22:28 finish.

The team will have the opportunity to compete in the NCAA Atlantic Regional meet in Slippery Rock on November 5th.   This is the first Cross Country team to compete for Chowan University as a member of NCAA DII, and they have accomplished a lot of “firsts” as a program over the course of this year.  Congratulations on a solid finish at the CIAA Championship-and good luck at the Regional meet!

The volleyball team is still hot!  They are 20-5 overall, and remain perfect in CIAA competition with a 13-0 record.  Victoria Lewis was named CIAA Player of the Week this week after tallying 30 kills in three matches.  Eleven of the 30 kills last week came in one match- against Shippensburg, Pennsylvania.  Congratulations Victoria!

The volleyball team hits the road this weekend as they take on Bowie State on Friday, Millersville on Saturday.  They return home on Monday to take on Virginia Union University.   This is their last home game of the season- so if you haven’t seen them in action yet Monday is your last chance!

The Chowan University Athletic Department launched a new athletic site this week.

The Game Day Central feature is still available; Hawks fans can look at Media Guides, Game Notes, Live Stats, and Video Stream if you can’t be there on game day.  The new site looks awesome- and still has the features from the old site, plus more!  Check it out at www.gocuhawks.com.

Go Hawks!
