Elsie Chamblee Slaughter

AHOSKIE – Elsie Chamblee Slaughter, age 98 of Ahoskie, passed away Sunday, October 9, 2011 at Guardian Care.

She was born in Hertford County on June 1, 1913 to the late Joseph James Chamblee and Maggie Wiggins Chamblee.

Mrs. Slaughter was a retired sales clerk for Belk’s in Ahoskie and a member of Hickory Chapel Freewill Baptist Church and a member of the Laura Wiggins Bible Class.  Back in the 50’s, she was a pianist for the church.  Mrs. Slaughter enjoyed working on the farm and loved gardening, especially her roses.  She enjoyed cooking, sewing, crocheting & knitting.  She loved her family and grandchildren very much and will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Bettie Slaughter Grimes and husband, William, of Murfreesboro; a brother, Willie Wiggins Chamblee of Ahoskie; grandchildren, Angie Colson Burgess and husband, Kenneth (“Keb”) Jr., of Ahoskie, and Abby Colson Landing and husband, Jason ,of Hertford; and two great grandchildren, Kenneth Tyler (“Ty”) Burgess and Bailey Elizabeth Burgess, both of Ahoskie.  She was predeceased by her loving husband of 67 years, Reuben Eldwood Slaughter.

A Celebration of Life Service was held on Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at Hickory Chapel Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Williams officiating.  Burial followed at Highland Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Hickory Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.
