Hey there Hawks fans!

CU fall sports are in full swing. The volleyball team is enjoying a 13-game win streak, and they have shutout 12 of their last 13 opponents.

In addition, this week freshman Nikira Fults was named CIAA Rookie of the Week. She had a stellar week for the Hawks as she tallied 10 blocks with eight of them occurring in a single match. The volleyball team is the only team in the CIAA that is undefeated in conference play, and they are also ranked No. 1 in the CIAA North Division. Congratulations girls- keep it up.

This week was also an exciting week for the softball team. The National Fastpitch Coaches Association released their Top-Ten All Academic teams, and Chowan softball ranked number seven in NCAA DII!  Our team GPA for last year was 3.435. We also had eight members of our team named Academic All-Americans. In order to be recognized as such, the student-athlete must have a 3.6 GPA or higher.  This is a really big accomplishment, and we are very proud to have achieved this.

The football team took a tough 43-29 loss last week to the Virginia Union Panthers. They seek redemption as they head to Lincoln, PA this week to take on the Lincoln University Lions. Both teams are 1-4 on the season, and Chowan is looking to earn their first CIAA win of the season this weekend. This is the first time ever that the Hawks will play Lincoln University in their house. Go Hawks!

October 22 is Homecoming at Chowan University. The football team is set to take on the Shaw University Bears at Garrison Stadium at 6 p.m. that night.  The Student Athlete Advisory Committee has been working hard to collect canned food donations for our food drive, and a portion of the profits from the Homecoming football game will be given to the Rich Square W. S. Creecy Training & Community Center. Come show your support for the Hawks and for the community!

The Chowan University golf team is hosting a golf tournament on October 22.  The tournament will be held at Valley Pine Country Club, and there are still spots available for entries. The golf team is also looking for support from local businesses in the form of hole sponsorships. Hole sponsors will receive a banner with the name of their company to display on the hole that they sponsor.   This is a great opportunity for advertisement, and a great way to support the golf team.  It’s a win-win situation!  If you are interested in sponsoring a hole, or participating in the golf tournament, contact Ellen Ordnung in the CU Athletic Department.

It’s hard to believe that basketball season is right around the corner.  The CIAA had their CIAA Media Day for basketball on Friday in Charlotte.   Preseason All-CIAA Selections were announced, along with predicted orders of finish.

From our women’s team, junior Talaya Lynch and senior Ransheda Jennings were selected to the All-CIAA Preseason team.  The women’s basketball team was predicted to finish third in the CIAA North, and the men’s team was predicted to finish fifth.

Time will tell…but it looks like the Hawks are set for success this year in conference play.

Go Hawks!
