Dancy Gilbert White

WINDSOR – Dancy Gilbert White, 86, of 139 W. Askewville Street, died Saturday, October 1, 2011 at his home.

He was born February 22, 1925 to the late Raleigh Gilbert and Viola Mizelle White.  He was predeceased by his wife, Annie Pearl Phelps White; his son, Dancy “Dan” Gilbert White, Jr.; a brother, William Raleigh White, and two sisters, Rosebud Hardison and Kathryn Todd.

Mr. White was a dedicated husband and a wise and loving father and grandfather.  He was an active spiritual and civic leader for many years, a true man of God who inspired love and devotion.  A member of Askewville Baptist Church for 75 years, he served as Deacon for over 50 years, and Church Clerk and Sunday School teacher for over 40 years.  He was also a Gideon.  He was a World War II veteran.  He was a farmer and logger most of his life.

Early in his life he started White Piling and Logging Co. which later grew into White Brothers, Inc.  In 2000, he started and was president of Dancy G. White Enterprises, Inc. and also the owner of D. G. White Service Center in Askewville.

During his life he served as a Director of First Union National Bank and Southern Bank & Trust Co.; Chairman of the Board of Bertie Memorial Hospital; Chairman of the ASCS Committee; County Commissioner; Fire Chief of Askewville Fire Department; President of  the Askewville Water Association, Askewville Lions Club and Roanoke and Tar River Gun Club.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at Askewville Baptist Church by the Rev. Freddie Harris.  Burial with military honors will follow in Edgewood Cemetery.

Survivors include daughters, Revonne White Hoggard, Julie White Mizelle and Viola “Vi” W. White, all of Askewville; two sons-in-law, Robert Hoggard and Nelson White; two sisters, Elmarie Johnson and Christine Cobb of Askewville; two sisters-in-law, Audrey Riddick of Ahoskie and Miriam White of Chesapeake, VA; and six grandchildren, Bobby Hoggard, Daniel Mizelle, David Mizelle, Scott White, Lori White and Amy White.  Special thanks to Linda Meeks and Irene Winbrone for their love and care.
