LAWTON, Ok. – Maggie A. Lewis was born on February 16, 1934 in Bertie County, North Carolina to Grover C. Sr. and Gladys R. (Hoggard) Alston. Maggie left this world to be with Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior, on September 18, 2011 in Lawton, Oklahoma.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 22, 2011 at Northwest Baptist Church with Dr. William Sprague, pastor, officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Viewing is scheduled for Wednesday, September 21, 2011 from 12 noon till 8 p.m. at Whinery-Huddleston Funeral Home.

Maggie was raised and attended school in Ahoskie, NC. She graduated from high school in 1953, and on December 4, 1961, married William H. (Bill) Lewis at Gatesville, NC. They moved to Lawton after the wedding with Bill stationed at Fort Sill. They spent 1962 and 1963 in Germany, but returned to Lawton in 1964 where they remained until the time of their death.

Maggie’s career included 12 years in the office at CR Anthony, five years at North American Van Lines, 20 years as an in-home caregiver, but over 50 years as a full time wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She has been an active member of Northwest Baptist Church since 1968 where she taught 1st through 6th grade Sunday school for 20 years and children’s church for 13 years. Maggie was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Bill; her parents; six brothers and a sister.

Survivors include two daughters, Winifred Phelps and husband, Dean, of Lawton, OK and Vicky Cross and husband, Ronnie, of Cary, NC; a granddaughter, Amber Talada and a great granddaughter, Makenna Walker, both of Lawton, OK; two sisters, Gladys Stratton in North Carolina and Lucille Hughson in Virginia; her large extended family in eastern North Carolina, and her devoted and loving church family from Northwest Baptist Church.
