Mr.  Zannie Jernigan Sr. was born on December 23, 1917 in Bertie County, North Carolina to the parents of Ed and Nancy Skull Jernigan.  He departed this life on Friday morning, September 16, 2011 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital.

He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Herbert, Isadora, Eddie, Estelle, Beatrice, Roosevelt, Georganna,

Virginia and Angeline.

Zannie Jernigan was a man of great vision.  As a young man he dreamed and he created. He was a benefactor and facilitator to many.

Zannie was the owner and operator of his own logging business.

He was joined in marriage with Lilly Mae Newsome (deceased) on August 6, 1938.  He was the father of Mary Louse Knight of Royal Palm Beach, FL, Jo Anne Manley, (Dupree) of Cambria Heights, NY, Zannie Jernigan Jr. (Teresa), of Baltimore, MD, Milton Jernigan, (Dorothy) of Winton, NC, Janice Pierce of Philadelphia, PA, Gloria Shuler of New York, NY, Maxine Holley (Kenneth) of Ahoskie, NC, Kenneth Jernigan (Brenda) of Ahoskie, NC, and Johnny Jernigan (Virginia) of Murfreesboro, NC.  He was the grandfather of a host of grandsons, granddaughters, great grandsons, great granddaughters, one great granddaughter and one great great grandson.  Also cherishing his memory are nieces, nephews and other relatives.

His funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Thursday September 22 at Phillipi Baptist Church, Ahoskie, NC. Rev. H. Michael Benford will be officiating. His interment will be in the church cemetery.
