Have some fun for a change

We deserve a break.

On the heels of scorching heat, suffocating smoke from the Dismal Swamp wildfire, a surprise earthquake, Hurricane Irene and this week’s deluge from the heavens, it’s high time we all get a chance to kick back our heels and have some fun for a change.

Two events in Ahoskie should prove to be exactly what the doctor ordered in his prescription for wholesome family entertainment.

The annual Atlantic District Fair is currently underway at the historic fairgrounds located off Holloman Avenue. There’s plenty to do and see at the fair, including information on healthy lifestyles, carnival rides and, of course, the yearly harness racing events, a “must-see” unique event in our little corner of the world.

On Friday, Ahoskie officials will roll out the proverbial red carpet and invite local citizens and out-of-area guests to the Roanoke-Chowan’s largest municipality to enjoy the eighth annual Heritage Day, a two-day celebration (Sept. 9-10) at the Ahoskie Creek Recreational Complex.

There, a wide assortment of events are planned…from a parade – anchored by Miss North Carolina – to music, food, games, etc…there’s something for everyone, from the young to the young at heart.

Worried about finances; don’t be as admission and parking are free. Other than purchasing food or shopping for bargains at the arts/crafts fair, what you’ll actually wind up spending at Heritage Day is time to have loads of free fun.

So, treat yourself to a well-deserved break from the ills of Mother Nature and enjoy one or both events!
