Raymond Thomas Doughtie

WINTON – Mr. Raymond Thomas Doughtie, age 85, passed away Sunday, September 4, 2011 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.

Mr. Doughtie was born July 23, 1926 in Hertford County, the son of the late Cola William Doughtie and Willie Leggett Doughtie. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Cola Wright Doughtie and Ray Doughtie; and a grandson, Cody Downs.

Mr. Doughtie retired from Golden Peanut Company after 32 years of service. Upon his retirement he owned and operated Pleasant Grove Garden Nursery for several years.

He was an active member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where he served as a deacon prior to helping start a new church, Maranatha Baptist Church. He made several trips to Chile where he help start a new church there.

He was a former member of the Aulander Fire Department and a former scout master for the local Boy Scouts of America.

Mr. Doughtie was a World War II Army Veteran and active in the local VFW for many years and he was a Gideon.

Survivors include his wife, Troley D. Doughtie; his children, Teresa D. Herring and her husband, Dan, of Rocky Mount, Thomas Doughtie and his wife, Carolyn, of Franklin, VA and Diane D. Blythe and her husband, Blake, of Winton; his grandchildren, Wood Downs, Allison H. Elliott, Trey Herring and Suzanne Drake; two great grandchildren, Logan Elliott and Kyle Thomas Drake; his brother, Howard Doughtie of Windsor; and a sister, Barbara Ann White of Askewville.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander with the Rev. J.N. Baggett officiating. Burial will follow at Aulander Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander on Tuesday from 7 until 8:30 p.m.
