WINDSOR – Bertie High School scored a win in its opening tennis match of 2011.

The Lady Falcons opened the new tennis campaign with a 9-0 victory over rival Hertford County High School last week.

“I’m very excited for my team,” BHS skipper Jackie Copeland said. “We have eight veterans and seven newcomers and I was pleased with how they worked as a unit with this being our first match of the season.”

Carmen Villamor started things well for the Lady Falcons with a straight set (6-0, 6-0) win over Claudia Rowe in the battle of number one seeds. Second-seeded Haley Williams also claimed victory, topping Dyani Hall by counts of 6-0 and 6-1.

Tori Dunlow kept the streak going for Bertie as she defeated Hertford County’s Dajah Chamblee by identical counts of 6-0. Kate White knocked off Katie Pierce by the same score in the battle of number four seeds.

In the fifth seeded matchup, Brook Bowen secured a victory for Bertie as she topped Caitlyn Walter by dual counts of 6-0 and then Kelsey White won the final matchup for the Falcons with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Brina Arellano.

“Since we won all single matches, I wanted to let the newcomers play doubles to get experience and I’m proud that they won all three,” Copeland said.

In the first doubles contest, Bertie’s Caroline White and Lindsey Faella defeated Hall and Chamblee while Ashley Harmon and Windy Todd secured a win over Rowe and Pierce.

In the final matchup of the day, Lauren Dunlow and Donna Villamor topped Walter and Arellano.

“The girls have really worked hard the past three weeks and, because most of the girls have never played the sport, I am proud of them for learning the skills quickly,” she said.

The Lady Falcons (1-0) will be back in action Thursday when they host Northeastern High School.
