James Garfield “Jimmie” Sullivan

LOUISBURG – Mr. James Garfield “Jimmie” Sullivan, 76, passed away Sunday, August 14, 2011.

A graveside service will be conducted Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Pinewood Memorial Park.

Mr. Sullivan, a native of Pitt County, lived his early life in Ahoskie.  He received an undergraduate and graduate degree in geology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and did much work on a doctorate at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. While in Wisconsin he spent 18 months in Antarctica working with the National Science Foundation.  For a number of years he worked as an instructor at UNC-Chapel Hill and also did geological work for EBASCO in Greensboro.

Mr. Sullivan was preceded in death by his parents, James Murray and Juanita Sermons Sullivan.

He is survived by his brothers, Maurice A. Sullivan and wife, Mary Lou, of Harrellsville, and Roger E. Sullivan of Ormond Beach, FL; sisters, Mary Rose Doyle and husband, Howard, of Zebulon, and Kay S. Vinson and husband, Woody, of Hampstead; and nieces and nephews, Hank, Glenn, and Joe Doyle, Kelly Bucco, and  Hope and Scott Vinson.

The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, August 20 at Wilkerson Funeral Home in Greenville.
