Clayton W. Horton

WINTON – Clayton Woodrow Horton, 92, of 302 N. Main Street, Winton, died Monday, July 11, 2011 in the Dept. of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Hampton, VA.

Mr. Horton was born in Gates County and was the son of the late Joseph William and Bessie Bell Landing Horton.  A retired millwright from Newport News Shipbuilding, he later worked as a security guard with Bennett Box in Ahoskie.

A member and deacon of Cool Spring Baptist Church, he had formerly been a member of Winton Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and taught Sunday school.  A former Boy Scout leader, he had served as an Army Medic during World War II from 1942 to1945.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Beatrice Horton Eure; and brothers, Clyde and Roy Horton.

Surviving are his wife of nearly 64 years, Emily Chappell Horton; two sons, Joseph Clayton Horton and wife, Leah, of Aulander and Dennis Lee Horton and wife, Allison, of Snow Hill; three grandchildren, Lauren Creech and husband Daniel, Brittany Horton, and Kevin Horton and wife, Kimberly; and four great-grandchildren, Tyler Blake Horton, Joseph Landon Horton, Ty San Nicolas Horton and Kiani Mae Horton.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 15 in Cool Spring Baptist Church by the Revs. Roger Kiker and Gilbert Crawford.  Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery.

Friends may join the family Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, and other times at the residence.
