Post 40 tops Ahoskie

AHOSKIE – Edenton took a 16-6 win over Ahoskie here Tuesday.

Post 40 pulled away to down Ahoskie in the Senior American Legion game that began as a close contest.

Edenton opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first frame.

Post 102 rallied for two marks in the bottom of the same inning.

Daniel Merritt singled to center for Ahoskie and then Brandon Warren hit a two-run homer to left to close the gap to 3-2.

Post 40 then added another run in the second and two more in the third as the claimed a 6- 2 lead.

Ahoskie closed the gap by one run in the bottom of the third.

Merritt doubled to left-centerfield and then went to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a Warren RBI-groundout as Ahoskie closed within 6-3.

Post 40 then ended thoughts of a comeback with four runs in the fourth, one in the sixth and two more in the seventh as they took a commanding 13-3 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Blake Hill had a solo homer to get Ahoskie within 13-4.

Post 40, however, scored three more times in the top of the eighth to take a 16-4 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, Ahoskie plated two runs.

Merritt was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a Warren single to center. Merritt then scored on an error on the play which allowed Warren to move to third. Warren scored on a Billy Nixon RBI-single to center.

A double play and a groundout then ended the inning and the game.

Warren and Nixon pitched four innings each for Ahoskie.

Post 102 had eight hits led by Merritt, Warren and Nixon with two each.

Ahoskie dropped to 3-10 overall with the loss. They will host Wilson in a 5 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday. The local senior team will then play Durham in a doubleheader at home on Sunday. First pitch for that two-game set is at 1 p.m.
