AHOSKIE – Ryland Edwards and Brandon Warren combined for a two-hitter here Wednesday.

The Ahoskie Post 102 Senior Team members led the local squad past Edenton Post 40 by a final of 4-3.

Post 102 got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first frame.

Marvin Harrell walked and took second on a wild pitch. He then scored when Daniel Merritt laced an RBI-single into left field.

Edenton rallied for a run in the top of the fifth to tie the contest, but Ahoskie came right back in the bottom of the inning.

Harrell reached first on an error and stole second. He then took third on a wild pitch before scoring on a Jud Smith RBI-single to put Post 102 back in front by a 2-1 count.

Post 40, however, came back to score a run in the top of the sixth, again deadlocking the game.

Ahoskie surged back in front in the home half of the sixth inning, however.

Edwards walked, Mitchell Godwin singled and Tyler Burden drew a base on balls to load the bases. Edwards, however, raced home on a Harrell RBI-fielder’s choice to give Ahoskie a 3-2 edge.

Post 102 padded their advantage with a single run in the bottom of the seventh stanza.

Merritt singled to left and took second on a wild pitch. He moved to third on a Blake Hill single and then scored on a Warren RBI-single to make it 4-2 in favor of the home team.

Edenton scored its final run in the top of the eight to close the gap to one run, but never got any closer.

Edwards pitched five and one-third innings allowing two runs on two hits while striking out eight. Warren tossed the final three and two-thirds and allowed one run on no hits. He struck out seven.

Ahoskie had nine hits led by Merritt with three.

“We got great pitching from Ryland and Brandon,” Post 102 Head Coach Dave Ellis said. “We got key hits and played good defense. This was a good win for us.”

Ahoskie improved to 2-2 for the season and will host a home double header today (Saturday) against Pitt County. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.

They will travel to New Bern for a 2 p.m. contest on Sunday.
