HCHS defeats Bertie

AHOSKIE – Hertford County finished the regular season with a bang.

Tyler Pryor and Tyler Burden combined to pitch a three-hitter and lead the Bears past rival Bertie High School 11-1 in the finale of Northeastern Coastal Conference play here Thursday night.

In addition to the victory, the Bears celebrated Senior Night as they played their final game before the 3-A playoffs next week.

Bertie opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first frame.

Adam Cowand singled to center before Devonte Holly is hit by a pitch. After a double play moved Cowand to third, he was able to score on a Matthew Hoggard RBI-single as the Falcons took a 1-0 lead.

HCHS came back, however, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Tyler Burden walked, stole second and took third on an error. Burden then scored on a Marvin Harrell sacrifice fly to tie the game. Brandon Warren reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second before giving Hertford County the lead for good on a Tucker Warren RBI-double to right-centerfield.

The Bears broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the second stanza.

Brandon Terry singled to left and then Burden singled and Harrell was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Terry scored on a Daniel Merritt sacrifice fly, but Brandon Warren was walked to reload the bases.

Tucker Warrant then had a three-run double before scoring himself on a Pryor RBI-single to left, giving Hertford County a 7-1 lead.

The Bears added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Terry singled to left and went to second on a wild pitch. He scored on a Burden RBI-double to right-center field. Burden scored on a Merritt RBI-single to left. Brandon Warren then drew another intentional walk, but a groundout ended the inning with HCHS leading 9-1.

The final two runs of the game were in the fourth frame as the Bears took an 11-1 lead.

Pryor doubled to center and pinch runner Walter Moore moved to third on a balk. He scored on a wild pitch. Bobby Merritt then singled to left, stole second and went to third on an error. He scored on a Burden RBI-triple to left.

Burden, on the mound in relief of Pryor, struck out the side in the top of the fifth frame to end the game.

Pryor pitched four innings for the win, allowing one run on three hits while striking out two. Burden tossed the final inning, striking out three.

The Bears pounded out a dozen hits during the contest, led by Burden’s three hits and two RBIs. Tucker Warren added two hits and four RBIs while Daniel Merritt had two hits and a pair of RBIs. Terry added two hits.

Javier Pagola, Hoggard and Cowand had one hit each for Bertie.

Hertford County improved to 14-7 overall and 7-5 in Northeastern Coastal Conference play. Bertie finished 0-12 in the league.
