RALEIGH — Steed Johnson, a native of Hertford County, signed a National Letter of Intent with Longwood University recently.

Johnson will play tennis at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I school in Farmville, Virginia after graduating from Brought High School here.

Johnson was the co-captain of this year’s Broughton team and played at the number one slot.

On the junior tennis circuit, he achieved a state ranking of number three in the fourteen age group, number nine while playing in the 16-year-old division, top 20 playing in the 18 and under age group.

His Southern ranking (Southern Division includes 10 states) has remained in the top 50 players over the past five years.

Johnson credited all his coaches – Troy Robinson, Matt Rowe, Chris Cagle, Randy Pate, Shane Wells and David Marquina – for his development and was thankful for Broughton Coach Bill White, who he said helped him on and off the court.
