Lawmen search river for alleged robber

Law enforcement officials returned to the Roanoke River at the NC 11 bridge this morning (Thursday) to resume searching for a suspected robber.

According to a report from www.witn.com, Roland Bell jumped off the bridge, located on the Bertie-Martin County line, following a high-speed chase that began in Greenville. There, Bell and two others are suspected of robbing a motorcycle shop around 1:30 a.m. today.

One suspect, Brandon Montane of Virginia, was arrested by Greenville Police. It was reported that Bell escaped on motorcycle, heading north on NC 11. Law enforcement personnel gave chase, often reaching speeds in excess of 100 mph.

That chase ended at the bridge, which is undergoing repairs. Construction workers said they saw the driver of the motorcycle strike a wheelbarrow in the work area and then watched him leap off the bridge into the water below.
