GATES – T.E. Cooke – Overton Funeral Home, Inc. regretfully announce the transition from this life of Deaconess Lucy Ann Jones on Friday, April 1, 2011 at Duke Medical Center, Durham.

She was born on September 26, 1940 in Gates, North Carolina, the eldest child of the late William H. and Mary Eva Hall Jones.

Lucy was educated in the Gates County Public School System and graduated from Central High School, Class of 1959.

At an early age, Lucy joined the membership of New Middle Swamp Missionary Baptist Church. She was a faithful member and served diligently as a Deaconess, member of the Pastor’s Aide, Missionary Society and the Usher Board. She attended weekly Bible Study and Sunday school.

She was a member of the Golden Rod Tent #94. She worked for many as a housekeeper and friend for the Willey and Umphlett Family.

She leaves behind to cherish her beautiful memory, a loving and devoted son, Clarence “Red” Jones; granddaughter, Keisha Jones; nine siblings, William C. Jones ( Martha), Elsie Riddick (William), Clementine Felton (Joseph), Herbert Jones (Alberta), Margaret Bacchus (Edward, “EJ”) Louis Jones (Marina), Thelma Gates (Charles), Norman Jones (Dolores), and Martha Wiggins (James); one aunt, Mrs. Tabitha Harrell (Robert); a special and devoted friend, James Norman; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.

Ms. Jones will be on view Friday, April 8 from 4-7 p.m. and Saturday, April 9, 12 noon – 5 p.m. and a wake service from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

A Home Going Service in her memory will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 10 at New Middle Swamp Baptist Church, Corapeake.
