Currituck edges Bertie

WINDSOR – Currituck County High School claimed a 3-0 Northeastern Coastal Conference baseball win over Bertie High here Friday night.

Currituck opened the scoring with one run in the top of the first frame and led 1-0 after the first inning.

In the bottom of the third stanza, Adam Cowand had a two-out double to right for the Falcons, but a groundout ended the inning.

Currituck added another run in the top of the fourth frame and led 2-0 heading into the bottom of the inning.

With two Falcons out, Matthew Hoggard singled and Justin Byrum walked, but a groundout again ended the inning with Currituck ahead 2-0.

The Knights scored the final run of the game in the top of the fifth.

Bertie’s last threat came in the home half of the same inning.

Allen Speller drew a leadoff walk. With one out, Cowand reached on a fielder’s choice. Devonte Holley then singled, but a strikeout ends the inning.

Joseph Eure tossed a complete game for the Falcons, allowing three runs on seven hits. He struck out 11.

Cowand,  Holley and Hoggard recorded Bertie’s three hits.

The Falcons fell to 0-4 in the league and will travel to Edenton tonight (Tuesday) to battle the league foe Aces. First pitch is 7 p.m.
