Doris Elaine Flood Newsome

AHOSKIE – Doris Elaine Flood Newsome, age 80, of Ahoskie, NC died Friday, December 10, 2010 at Bethesda Health and Rehabilitation Center, Bethesda, Maryland.

She was born September 15, 1930 in Hertford County, NC, the daughter of the late Virgie Deloatch and Lee Flood Sr.

On September 8, 1959 she was married to Arthur Roger Newsome, who predeceased her. From that union came a daughter, Jacqueline, who survives.

She graduated as Valedictorian of the class of 1949 from Robert L. Vann High School in Ahoskie. She graduated as Salutatorian in 1953 from Elizabeth City State Teachers College, now known as Elizabeth City State University. She did graduate studies at Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts.

She taught in the Hertford County School System for 31 years, retiring in 1986. She taught second and seventh grades during that career. After retirement, she volunteered numerous hours tutoring students in her home for many years.

She served as recording secretary to the Roanoke-Chowan Hospital Board of Directors and worked in the hospital for many years.

She was also a member of the Hertford County Retired School Personnel.

She joined Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Ahoskie at an early age and served faithfully in many capacities. She later transferred her membership in 1996 to Jordan Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Winton and was an active and faithful member until her illness in May 2010.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jacqueline and Carleton Williams of Saline, Michigan; four grandsons, Ajene of Burlington, Vermont, Samuel of Baltimore, Maryland, Carleton II and Jonathan of Saline, Michigan.  She also leaves to mourn a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and a dedicated, faithful church family at Jordan Grove Missionary Baptist Church whom she loved deeply.

A wake is scheduled for Friday evening, December 17, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Jordan Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Winton, NC.  The funeral will be conducted at Jordan Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Saturday, December 18 at 11:00 a.m.  Burial will take place at Hillcrest Cemetery, Ahoskie.
