William W. Peele Jr.

LEWISTON – William W. Peele Jr. of Lewiston died Monday, November 22, 2010 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

He is the son of the late Lizzie C. Peele and William W. Peele Sr. He is the stepson of Pauline V. Peele of Lewiston.

Mr. Peele was raised in the Lewiston community and attended elementary school at John B. Bond Union School, Lewiston, and is a graduate of the former Southwestern High School of Windsor.

He is a Magma Cum Laude graduate of Elizabeth City State University. There he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Middle Grades Education with concentrations in Math and Science.

Further studies were done at East Carolina University. He earned a Master of Arts in School Administration as well as an Education Specialist Degree (EDS) in School Administration. He completed the Principal’s Executive Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

He has been a classroom teacher. He has taught math and science. He has been as Assistant Principal, Middle School Principal, High School Principal and Assistant Superintendent. His thirty-one years of service in Public Education were with Bertie County Schools.

He served as the CAPE Director of Shaw University’s CAPE Center in Ahoskie.

He was married to the former Gwendolyn Hodges of Williamston and was the father of two sons – William W. Peele III (Trey) of Lewiston, a principal in the Bertie County Public Schools system, and Dexter L. Peele, a senior at Elizabeth City State University majoring in Pre-Pharmacy.

Mr. Peele was a member and a deacon at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, Lewiston. He sang in the Senior Choir and Male Chorus.

He held membership in the NAACP, Worshipful Master Palestine Lodge #434, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Rho Rho Chapter of Ahoskie, and the National Education Association.

Mr. Peele enjoyed farming, growing vegetable gardens, public speaking and singing classic gospels.

In addition to his wife, two sons, and stepmother, Mr. Peele is survived by two brothers, Martino Peele and Anthony Peele, both of Lewiston; a sister, Zelma Harmon of Ahoskie; and a daughter-in-law, Keisha Peele of Lewiston.

His funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, November 27, 2010 at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, Lewiston. Rev. Travis Judkins will be officiating. Interment will be in the Outlaw Memorial Family Cemetery, Lewiston.
