George Washington Shoulars

RICH SQUARE – Mr. George Washington Shoulars, age 89, died at his home in Rich Square on Sunday, November 21, 2010.

Mr. Shoulars is a native of Bertie County. He served in the US Army from 1944-1946.  He was married to Mary Frances Shackelford in 1951 and they made their home in Northampton County, where they farmed for many years.  Mr. Shoulars was deacon and member of the Sandy Run Baptist Church.  He was a member of the American Legion Post # 111.  In 1991 he was awarded the Northampton County Forestry Award. He served on the Farm Bureau Board of Directors from 1981-2005.

Preceding him in death are his mother and father, Lucy Burkett Shoulars and Charlie Everett Shoulars, and his brother, Everett Shoulars.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Francis Shackelford Shoulars of the home; three sons, Scott Shoulars and his wife, Louise, of Reidsville, NC, Steven Shoulars and his wife, Debbie, of Raleigh, NC and Joe Shoulars and his wife, Kim, of Cary, NC; and one sister, Kate Barber of Menola, NC.  Also surviving are six grandchildren; Meagan, Christopher, Mary, Katie, Kelly and Adam Shoulars.

Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Sandy Run Baptist Church in Roxobel, NC with Dr. Dave Rimel officiating.  The interment will follow at the Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery in Roxobel.

The family will receive friends at Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square on Tuesday evening from 7:00-8:30 p.m.
