The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a work zone accident in Beaufort County earlier this week that claimed the life of a Murfreesboro man.

Charles Leander Barnes, 56, an employee with Rose Brothers Paving of Ahoskie, was tragically killed when he was struck by a dump truck at a bridge construction site over Pungo Creek near Belhaven.

According to information posted on witn.com, Rose Brothers crews were performing a paving operation at the time of the accident.

The NC Department of Transportation was also involved in the subsequent investigation. Their report, according to the TV news website, revealed the mandated back-up alarms on the dump truck were operational. However, due to the noise at the construction site, it’s apparent the victim could not hear the alarm as the dump truck was backing in his direction.

No charges have yet to be filed in the fatal accident.

The name of the dump truck driver was not released.

Funeral services for Barnes will be held at 12 noon on Nov. 15 at Nebo Missionary Baptist Church, Murfreesboro. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
