MURFREESBORO — Town officials here may be looking to amend their solid waste plan in order to receive funds to begin an electronics recycling program.

On Tuesday, Murfreesboro Town Administrator Lee Capps presented information from Southern City, a publication printed by the League of Municipalities, to the Murfreesboro Town Council about the electronics recycling program. According to the article, funds are available to local governments through an electronics recycling program.

The program is one part of NC Senate Bill 887 (Amend Electronics Recycling Law), which bans the disposal of computer equipment and televisions in landfills effective July 1, 2011. The landfill ban and recycling responsibilities apply to electronic devices used by individuals for personal, home business or nonprofits with fewer than 10 employees.

Under the law, computer and television manufacturers who wish to sell their products must create a recycling program to take back their own equipment from residential consumers. The manufacturers will need to pay an initial registration fee and a subsequent annual renewal fee. Those fees will go into a fund, which the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) will disperse to local governments.

Local municipalities, in turn, will be able to utilize the fees to develop local e-recycle programs for residential consumers.

Capps noted the council would have until December 31 to amend the town’s solid waste plan.
