Susan “Susie” Vida Cowand Harden, age 87, passed away on July 28, 2010, at the Brian Center of Windsor, NC.
Mrs. Harden was born on January 23, 1923 to the late Starkey Valentine Cowand and Nettie Jernigan Cowand in Merry Hill, NC. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Walter Harden on July 23, 1964. She was also preceded in death by her sisters; Vannie Mae Cowand, Alice Evans, Nettie Bartlett, Virgie Nortcott, Bettie Meinka Rachel Leavitt, Frances Cowand, and Reba White, brothers; Henry Allen Cowand, Starkey Cowand, George C “Duck” Cowand and Bill Cowand.
Mrs. Harden was retired from the Bertie County Schools Food Services Department. She was the cafeteria manager of Bertie High School from 1974 to 1983. She was a homemaker and a peanut inspector at Gilliam Brothers Peanut Company of Windsor. She was a Sunday School teacher at Green’s Cross Baptist Church of Windsor where she was a member for many years.
Survivors include her sons; Charlie Walter Harden, Jr. and wife Verline of Fayetteville, NC; John Starkey Harden and wife Patricia of Raleigh, NC and George Allen Harden and wife Lillian of Windsor, NC. She is also survived by seven grandchildren; Charlie Walter Harden, III and wife Veronica, of Florence SC, Jessica Harden Moore and husband Gary of Wilmington, NC, Michael Harden and wife Laura of Windsor, Rebecca Harden of Holly Springs, NC Katherine Harden of Raleigh, NC Victoria Harden of Raleigh, NC, and Joseph Harden of Windsor, NC. She is also survived by one great grandchild, Christopher Harden of Florence SC. She is also survived by two brothers; Thomas Cowand, Jerry Cowand of Merry Hill, NC.
A celebration of her life will be held at Green’s Cross Baptist Church, Windsor, NC, on Saturday, July 31, 2010 at 11:00 am with the Reverend J.N. Baggett an the Reverend Hugh Mizelle officiating.
The family will receive friends at Walker Funeral Home, on Friday, July 30, 2010 from 7:00 – 8:30 pm and at other times from the home of Michael and Laura Harden at 1008 Old US 17 North, Windsor, NC.
