MURFREESBORO — One Murfreesboro teen received a chance to see the ins and outs of the North Carolina General Assembly.

Recently, the Murfreesboro Town Council recognized Briana L. Joyner for participating in the 2010 Session of the North Carolina General Assembly.

At the June 22 meeting of the Council, Joyner was presented with a framed resolution by Mayor John Hinton. The council approved the resolution at their June 8 meeting. Joyner was joined in the audience by her grandmother, Mary Porter.

“The Town Council are the elected representatives of the citizens of Murfreesboro and recognize that the hope for a productive and successful future for our nation, state, county and town will require that young persons be responsive to the responsibilities of elected office and familiar with the processes of government,” the resolution reads.

The Hertford County High School rising sophomore spent a week in Raleigh living with a host family, working as a Page with Representative Annie W. Mobley and observing the workings of the General Assembly.

“It was hard to hear,” she said about her experience observing the government representatives on the floor. “(Mrs. Mobley) was very nice and she introduced me to her daughter.”

Joyner said Councilwoman Gloria Odum suggested she apply to the Page program.

“It was really fun and it was a good experience,” said Joyner.

As for a career in politics, Joyner simply said, “No,” but as for returning as a Page in the future, Joyner implied she might seek out the opportunity again.
