Wayne County tops Ahoskie

AHOSKIE – Post 11 built an 11-0 lead and never looked back here Sunday afternoon.

The visiting Wayne County team used that lead to down Ahoskie American Legion Post 102 16-5 in a Senior American Legion contest.

Already trailing 10-0 heading into the bottom of the third, the local post challenged.

Marvin Harrell had an infield single and Braxton Sumner drew a walk. Harrell moved to third on a double play that erased Sumner.

Tyler Burden and Kyle Horton drew walks to load the bases, but a strikeout ended the threat.

Post 11 added a run in the top of the fourth frame and grabbed an 11-0 advantage.

Post 102 responded with its first mark in the bottom of the fourth.

Zeek Williams doubled down the left field line and went to third on a wild pitch. Williams then scored on a Daniel Merritt RBI-groundout to close the gap to 11-1.

Wayne County added two runs in the top of the fifth inning, but Post 102 responded with three in the bottom of the fifth.

Blake Hill started the Ahoskie scoring with a solo homer in the fifth. Eli Spruill then singled to left before Williams and Merritt had back-to-back singles to load the bases.

Spruill and Williams scored on a Tyler Pryor single to center to close to within 13-4.

Wayne County then scored three runs in the top of the sixth and led 16-4 through the middle of the seventh stanza.

In the bottom of the seventh, Spruill doubled to left and went to third on a wild pitch. He then scored on a Judson Smith sacrifice fly, but a strikeout ended the game.

Post 102 used five pitchers including Spruill, Pryor, Harrell, Hill and Sumner.

Ahoskie recorded 11 hits. Spruill, Williams, Pryor and Hill had two hits each.

Ahoskie dropped to 0-13 with the loss and will play Garner at Rocky Mount on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
