NORFOLK, Va. – Dorothy Dunn Futrell Carter, 87, a longtime resident of the Bayview area, passed away quietly June 24, 2010 in a local hospital.
Born April 6, 1923, Dot (as she was known to her friends) was nothing short of a wife, a mother, a babysitter when needed, a storyteller when asked, an impromptu historian, a gardener when inspired, and a friend always.
Originally from Hertford County, NC, she was the widow of William Madison Carter. She was also a founding member of Bayview Baptist Church and later a member of Ocean View Baptist Church.
She is survived by her four daughters, Cheryl C. Morris and husband, Al, of Hampton, VA, Denise C. Strickland and husband, Rob, of Norfolk, VA, Debbie C. Odom and husband, Goose, of Barnesville, GA and Cathie C. Douthat and husband, Mike, of Norfolk, VA; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, on Sunday, June 27 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 28 at Ahoskie Cemetery, Ahoskie, NC.
