Edenton downs Ahoskie

AHOSKIE – Edenton Post 40 took a 20-7 win in a Senior American Legion contest at Ahoskie Sunday night.
Edenton led by nine runs before Ahoskie Post 102 got on the board.
In the bottom of the fifth frame, Mitchell Godwin singled to left and took third on a double by Travis Ellis. Godwin scored on a Daniel Merritt RBI-groundout and Ellis did the same on an Eli Spruill RBI-groundout.
Back-to-back walks were issued to Zeek Williams and Brad Miller, but a lineout to second ended the inning with Ahoskie trailing 9-2.
Edenton added four more in the top of the sixth stanza to lead 13-2. Post 40 then added two more in the seventh to go ahead 15-2.
Ahoskie roared back with four runs in the bottom of the seventh stanza.
Merritt doubled down the right field line and went to third on a wild pitch before Spruill walked.
Merritt then scored on a Williams RBI-single. Williams was erased at second when Miller reached on a fielder’s choice before Spruill raced home on a wild pitch.
Clay Robbins walked and Judson Smith was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Miller and Robbins then scored on a Tyler Burden single to left closing the gap to 15-6.
Ahoskie scored another run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a solo homerun by Spruill.
Williams doubled to left and reached third on a Miller single, but the two were left stranded after a strikeout ended the inning.
Post 40 then added five runs in the ninth for the victory.
Ahoskie had nine hits in the contest paced by Williams, who had three.
Ahoskie is now 0-11 overall and 0-6 in conference play.
They will host Jones County at 7 p.m. Thursday.
