Janie Elizabeth Crawford, age 94, of Merritt Island, Fla. (formerly of Ahoskie), was received into glory on May 6, 2010 surrounded by her loving family.
Janie was born November 9, 1915 in Maysville to Robert and Minnie Henderson. She was a Home Economics graduate of Wingate Junior College (now Wingate University). On Valentine’s Day, 1938, Janie met her husband, Truxton James Crawford. They were married on April 30 of that same year.
Janie enjoyed being a homemaker and was active in the Home Demonstration Clubs of North Carolina. She entered many of her canned goods, baked goods and sewing projects in the NC State Fair each year. Janie and Truxton were active members of Ahoskie First Baptist Church where she faithfully taught the children’s Sunday Evening class for many years.
Janie loved and lived for her family. She always opened her home to others whether it was “the preacher’s kids” while the preacher and wife took a short vacation or some traveling performers who had put on programs at our church. We have fond memories of her hosting many holiday meals for our extended family. Janie will be truly missed.
Janie & Truxton regularly enjoyed taking the family on summer vacations. Our trips included camping in the North Carolina mountains or at the seashore, visiting the New York World’s Fair (1964), and eating “square doughnuts” (beignets) at midnight at Café du Monde in the French Quarter of New Orleans.
In their later years, Janie and Truxton traveled extensively all over the United States towing their little Airstream trailer as they visited friends, family and many national parks. They moved down to Florida in 1994 to enjoy the nice weather and live closer to their children and grandchildren. They continued to enjoy camping with their “snow-bird” friends.
Janie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her only brother, Robert Henderson of Mobile, Ala.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Robert James Crawford and Helen, Elizabeth Jean Pearson and Phil and Ann Crawford Tayloe and Robert; eight grandchildren, Teresa Justice and Lisa Wise, David Pearson and wife, Theresa, Michael Pearson and wife, Jami-Jon, Heather Tayloe, Matthew Tayloe and wife, Misty, Ruth Tayloe and Jonathan Tayloe and wife, Amy; and eleven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m., May 16 at First Baptist Church in Ahoskie with internment following in the Ahoskie Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of FBC Ahoskie after the funeral service.
