WINDSOR — A Williamston man is in critical condition after a single vehicle crash near here.

Early Sunday morning, Randolph Hyman, 20, of Williamston was transported by an Eastcare ground unit to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville after the vehicle he was operating struck a utility box and a pine tree.

According Trooper A.S. Genao of the North Carolina Highway Patrol’s Troop A, District 2, Hyman was operating a 2002 Chevy Impala south on Cedar Landing Road at approximately 1 a.m. when the vehicle went right off of the roadway.

The vehicle then struck a utility box and then went sideways and hit a pine tree. Genao said both Hyman and his passenger, Aaron Spruill, 19, also of Williamston were restrained. Alcohol is listed as the factor in the crash.

Hyman was transported by ground to Pitt Memorial. Genao said Eastcare could not use a helicopter for the transport due to inclement weather weather.

Spruill was transported to Bertie Memorial Hospital where he was treated and later released.

Genao said charges are pending, including DWI and careless and reckless driving. Spruill was cited for underage drinking.
