Crash leaves one critical

LEWISTON — A Windsor man is in critical condition after a single vehicle crash near here.

On Friday night, Shawn Cherry, 34, was airlifted by Eastcare to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville after the vehicle he was operating hit a utility pole and flipped four times.

According to a report filed by Trooper A.S. Genao of the North Carolina Highway Patrol’s Troop A, District 2, Cherry’s vehicle, a 1993 Lexus, was traveling west on Mt. Olive Road when it went left of center.

Genao said the vehicle traveled off the left side of the road, struck a utility pole and flipped four times. He added it was estimated that the vehicle was traveling at 100 miles per hour when it struck the utility pole. Cherry was ejected from the vehicle.

Alcohol is also listed as a factor in the crash and Genao said Cherry was not restrained.

Charges are pending including DWI, careless and reckless driving and no seat belt.
