Firemen extinguish early morning blaze

AHOSKIE – As of 6:30 a.m. today, firefighters from three departments were clearing the scene of a house fire in Ahoskie.
Fire reportedly broke out in an unoccupied home located at the corner of Catherine Creek Road and Odom Street somewhere around 3 a.m.
Ahoskie Fire Chief Ken Dilday told the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald that the two story, framed house was engulfed in flames upon the arrival of his department. He said it appeared the fire began in the rear portion of the home.
Firefighters from Union and Winton volunteer fire departments joined Ahoskie firemen in an effort to extinguish the blaze as well as protecting nearby homes.
Dilday said he had contacted Ahoskie Police Lt. Detective Jeremy Roberts to investigate the cause of the fire.
