Bears claim historic win

KILL DEVIL HILLS – Hertford County High School recorded a first here Tuesday night.

Brandon Warren had three hits and four RBIs as the Bears beat First Flight High School 8-6, securing their first-ever victory over the school on the baseball diamond.

The Bears opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first frame.

Marvin Harrell and Daniel Merritt each singled. The two came home to score on a Warren base hit. Warren then scored on a Tyler Pryor RBI-groundout as the Bears led 3-0.

First Flight came back to score twice in the bottom of the inning to close their deficit to 3-2.

The Bears plated two more in the top of the second.

Brandon Staton drew a walk before Harrell and Merritt had back-to-back singles. Staton and Harrell then scored on a two-run hit by Warren as HCHS led 5-2.

Hertford County added two more in the visitors half of the fourth frame.

Warren singled and scored on a Pryor RBI-double. Pryor then raced home on a Montario Hunter RBI-triple which gave the Bears a 7-2 edge.

The Nighthawks rallied for four runs in the home half of the fifth to close the gap to 7-6.

Hertford County added an insurance run when Pryor was hit by a pitch in the sixth. Brandon Taylor, who came in as a courtesy runner, eventually scored on a wild pitch making it 8-6.

Warren tossed seven innings for the win allowing six runs on seven hits. He struck out 12 in improving to 3-1 for the season.

Leading the Bears offensively were Harrell and Warren with three hits each. Hunter and Merritt added two hits while Pryor had one hit and two RBIs.

Hertford County improved to 2-1 in Northeastern Coastal Conference play.
