RICH SQUARE — Two men have been arrested after allegedly attempting to steal a vehicle from the property of a Northampton County commissioner.

According to Northampton County Sheriff Wardie Vincent, his office responded to a call received Monday morning in reference to two subjects stealing a vehicle from a farm on Bolton Road outside of Rich Square. The farm belongs to Chester Deloatch who serves on the Northampton County Board of Commissioners.

Vincent said the two suspects, both of Rich Square, were caught as they were attempting to flee the scene with the vehicle.

Jamel Peele, 34, of 164 Cumbo Road and Donald Debreaux, 43, of 166 Cumbo Road were taken into custody by Deputy Antwan Johnson.

Peele and Debreaux were each charged with one count of larceny of a motor vehicle. Both men were placed in the Northampton County Jail, each on a $500 secured bond.

Vincent said it is believed the suspects were allegedly stealing the vehicle to be sold for scrap metal. He added there could be more charges pending in relation to the two suspects stealing scrap metal.

He asked those who have more information or may have had scrap metal stolen to call the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office at 534-2611.
