MERRY HILL – The old cliché would say Lawrence Academy couldn’t throw one in the ocean.
While it wasn’t quite that bad, the Warriors were as cold offensively as they have been all season, scoring just 28 points in a 44-28 loss to Hobgood Academy here Friday night.
“We never considered that the frigid temperatures outside would affect our shooting,” quipped second-year skipper Jon Powell.
The Warriors led 9-8 after one quarter, but never led after that as the Raiders were able to pull away to win number 13 for the season.
Lawrence got a hoop from Patrick Dilday with just 30 seconds left in the first quarter to take a 9-8 lead.
The second quarter began with Hank Edmondson burying a three-pointer that led the Raiders on a 15-1 run that helped Hobgood grab a 21-11 advantage with 2:23 to play in the first half.
Shabazz Atkins eventually stopped the spurt with a hoop for Lawrence at the 1:49 mark of the quarter and added another bucket with two ticks left on the first half clock to close the gap to 21-15.
The third quarter was another low-scoring affair with the Raiders outscoring Lawrence 7-6 and taking a 28-21 lead into the final quarter.
Lawrence scored four of the six points in the closing 1:19 of the period thanks to free throws by Cade Larabee and Evan Holton.
Atkins started the fourth-quarter with a pair of hoops, but the Raiders went on the attack and scored seven unanswered to grab a 35-23 lead and all but put the game away.
Edmondson led the Raiders with 21 points.
Atkins paced Lawrence with 10 followed by Holton with six. Larabee and Chase Stevens scored five points each.
