CORAPEAKE – A residential fire near here Saturday morning proved deadly.

Gates County Emergency Management Director Billy Winn told the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald that three individuals were in the home at the time of the 9 a.m. blaze.

Two were able to make their way to safety, but another did not. Winn reported the body of an individual was discovered in an upstairs bathroom.

No names were released, nor was the cause of the fire, which Winn said remains under investigation.

The American Red Cross was summoned to assist the two survivors.
