ASKEWVILLE – Despite making the championship game of their annual tip-off tournament, things didn’t go the way of Bethel Christian Academy here Saturday.
Williamsburg Christian Academy scored the first 22 points of the contest and claimed the tourney title with a 59-19 victory.
WCA started the contest with back-to-back hoops from Libby Timmer to take a 4-0 lead. Tonika Pierce and Keyana Brown then had consecutive hoops for Williamsburg before a free throw and hoop from Pierce made it 11-0.
Brown scored again from the floor and Becca Perkins hit from behind the arc. Perkins then had two straight buckets and Stephanie Rubino scored to push the Williamsburg lead to 22-0.
Kelsey Conner got the Lady Eagles on the board with 2:12 left in the quarter. Lynn Dunn answered, however, and WCA held a 24-2 lead after one quarter.
Amanda Outlaw scored for Bethel to open the second quarter, but Williamsburg came back with a Jalynn Ponzo bucket to make it 26-4.
Conner scored again for BCA midway through the period, but it would be Bethel’s last score of the first half as Williamsburg went on a 10-0 run to close out the first half with a 36-6 lead.
The third quarter started with another Conner hoop, but Williamsburg had the next seven points to go ahead 43-8.
Jessica Howerton then scored for BCA to get them to double figures (43-10). The home team trailed 51-10 heading into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, Bethel outscored their visitors 9-8. Howerton, Conner and Kristin Adams each had scores for the home team.
Conner led Bethel with 11 points while Howerton added four. Adams and Outlaw had two points each.
Williamsburg was paced by Pierce’s 15 points while Brown added eight points.
Bethel will return to action tonight (Tuesday) when they travel to Ahoskie Christian School.
