Malachi Staten

Malachi R. Staten, 77, of Ahoskie died Sunday, November 29, 2009 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.
A native of Cape Charles, Va., he owned Staten’s Barber Shop in Cofield and was the chairman deacon at Newsome Grove Baptist Church. He was also a member of Jerusalem Lodge #96, American Legion Post 102 and served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Staten of the home; two sons, Robert Staten and John Jordan, both of Ahoskie; six daughters, Betty Scott of Ahoskie, Kyan Staten of Winston-Salem, Shenita Valentine of Middletown, Conn., Myan Edwards of Winston-Salem, Beverly Staten of Hampton, Va. and Valerie Thompson of Ahoskie; two sisters, Maggie Lewis of Ahoskie and Gracie Johnson of Boston, Mass.; 20 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5 at Newsome Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Smallwood officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.
