WINDSOR – Two Bertie High School teachers are suspended while an investigation into alleged sexual indiscretions is conducted.

Bertie County Schools Superintendent Dr. Chip Zullinger said a parent of a former student first made a complaint to Assistant Superintendent of Schools Kenneth Perry who immediately began investigating the allegation.

“As a result of the complaint, I called in the first teacher and suspended him with pay early on November 5,” Dr. Zullinger said. “We had conversations with the mother and the former student on the same day which led to the suspension of another teacher.” Dr. Zullinger said his office immediately contacted Bertie County Sheriff Greg Atkins with the allegation to allow them to conduct any criminal investigation that may be necessary.

Reached by telephone Tuesday afternoon, Sheriff Atkins confirmed his office had received the information and also said he had referred it to the State Bureau of Investigation.

As for the school district’s inquiry into the matter, Dr. Zullinger said he hoped it would be complete by the Christmas holidays.

“We’re going to move to a conclusion as quickly as we can,” he said.
