Sophronia Powell

Sophronia Jernigan “Buck” Powell, age 75 of the 100 block of NC Hwy 42 West, died Tuesday, November 17, 2009, at Roanoke Chowan Hospital.
Mr. Powell was born in Hertford County, the son of the late “Fronie” and Mary Trummell Powell. He was the grandson of the late John W. and Mary J. Powell and the late John Thomas and Harriett Freeman Trummell.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Ahoskie, and attended Earlys Baptist Church when he was able. Buck worked for many years for Minton’s Drycleaners and later for Dixon’s Drycleaners.
Left to cherish his memory are his sisters, Mary Powell Taylor, Barbara Powell Martin and Lila Powell Davenport, all of Ahoskie. Besides his parents and grandparents, Buck was predeceased by a sister, Betty Rose Powell.
A celebration of life service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Friday, November 20, 2009 in the Ashley Memorial Chapel at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home, with burial to follow in Ahoskie Cemetery. Rev. Ronald McSwain and Rev. Robert May will officiate.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. Flowers are welcome or memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
