Rams reach Elite Eight

AHOSKIE – Ridgecroft School is moving on in its pursuit of a North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association state soccer championship.

The Rams, seeded number four in the state playoff bracket, knocked out number 13 seed Davidson Day School 7-0 here Friday afternoon at the Mike Bryant Soccer Field.

The Rams got a hat trick from junior Ryan Beggs and a shutout from senior keeper Ethan Phelps as they advanced to today’s (Tuesday) second round matchup. Ridgecroft will host fifth-seeded Statesville Christian School at 3:30 p.m.

On Friday, the Rams got three goals from Beggs and two goals and two assists from Michael Byrum. Aaron Rock added one goal and one assist while Blake Sumner also had a tally. Chase Riddick added one assist.

“We got the result we wanted, but not the performance,” said Ridgecroft skipper Aron Martin. “I thought we were sluggish overall and not very sharp.

“We have to pick up the intensity for Tuesday, that’s for sure,” Martin added.

The winner of Tuesday’s contest will advance to the Final Four of the NCISAA state 1-A tournament. They will play at 2 p.m. Friday at the J. Burt Gillette Athletic Complex in Wilson.

Tuesday’s winner in Ahoskie will meet the winner of top-seeded Greenfield School and number eight Wayne Christian School.
