Local man arrested in drug bust

WILLIAMSTON – A Bertie County man is among 24 suspects arrested in Operation Street Sweeper here Thursday.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office, the Williamston Police Department, North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement and the Unites States Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms worked together to arrest 24 of the 26 accused drug suspects.
Among those picked up by the law enforcement agencies was Antwand Cherry of Bertie County. He is charged with trafficking in opium by possession, trafficking in opium by transportation, possession with intent to sale and deliver a Schedule II narcotic and possession with intent to sell and deliver counterfeit controlled substances.
Cherry is in the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail under a $100,000 secured bond. His next court date is October 21.
Others arrested in the round-up included those from Williamston, Greenville, Jamesville, Hamilton and Bear Grass.
