CURRITUCK – Bertie High School won four singles matches and held on to defeat Currituck County High School 5-4 in a varsity tennis match here last week.
The Lady Falcons won a trio of tie-breakers during the event to secure the victory.
“The girls worked so hard for this win,” said BHS skipper Jackie Copeland. “I was proud of them. Kate White, Terri-Lynn Smith and Sandi Todd went to tie-breakers in their match and were able to pull out victories.”
Copeland said she was also proud of her number three doubles team of Donna Mizelle and Whitney Harden even though they suffered a defeat.
“Even though Whitney and Donna lost their doubles match in a tie-breaker, I was so proud of them,” Copeland said. “They were down 4-1 and battled back to 10-all before losing in the tie-breaker.”
Number one seed Jody Mizelle handily won her match as she defeated Korishina Key by identical counts of 6-1. Smith then took the number two singles match with a 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 win over Lindsey Bull.
In the number seed four contest, the Lady Falcons’ Todd defeated Dori Brooks 7-5, 3-6 and 10-5 while White won her number six matchup 2-6, 6-3 and 10-7.
Third-seeded Carmen Villamor suffered a loss by identical counts of 7-5 in her match with Mercedes Rouse and Krysta Messiner defeated Andrea Dunlow 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles, Mizelle and Smith combined to beat Key and Brooks 10-7 to secure the team victory.
At number two, Bull and Rouse defeated Dunlow and Todd 10-6 and then the Lady Falcons lost the number three matchup in a tie-breaker.
“We won a close game and it takes the whole team to do that,” Copeland said. “I’m proud of my girls and the way they competed.”
