Alice “Skippy” Wright Jenkins, beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend, peacefully passed away October 1, 2009. She was 91.
Mrs. Jenkins was born on May 28, 1918 to the late James L. Wright and Fate Harris Wright in Greensboro, NC. In 1939 she graduated from the North Carolina College for Women with a teaching degree. Soon afterward, she moved to Aulander, NC with her husband Herbert Jenkins.
“Skippy” was passionate about dancing and an avid reader. She was dedicated to her family and gracious with everything she had. For as long as I can remember she welcomed people into her home and offered the most southern hospitality. If you came to visit Skippy you were sure to leave with some of her famous peanut brittle. She shared her countless poetry books with anyone who was interested and was always eager to hear from family and friends. She loved her children, adored her grandchildren, and (secretly) delighted in her great grandchildren the most. She was the strongest woman I’ve ever known and her kindness and love affected many.
She was a long time member of Aulander Baptist Church and her faith in Christ was evident in her life. She was a member of the Aulander Ladies Auxiliary and the Aulander Baptist Church Missionary Prayer Group.
“Skippy” was preceded in death by her loving husband, Herbert Jenkins Sr.; and her first grandson, Tripp Joyner. She is survived by her three children: Sue and her husband Jimmy Joyner, of Greensboro, NC, Peg and her husband, Jack Brinkley of Aulander, and Dick and his wife Anne of Raleigh, NC. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Clint Brinkley and his wife Stephanie and their children, Alex and Austin; Ginger Brinkley Thornton and her husband James Thornton and their children, Ann Fate and Alice; Lauren Jenkins Hoffert and her husband James Hoffert and their son, Owen; and Hannah Jenkins. Also surviving is her sister, Jenney Brewer of Wake Forest, NC; and a brother Chester Wilkinson of Jacksonville, FL.
Visitation at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home will be Saturday night from 7:00 to 8:30. A private interment ceremony will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m., followed by a memorial service at Aulander Baptist Church at 3:00 p.m. The Rev. Jerry Johnson and Rev. Robbie Parker will officiate. Her family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Aulander Baptist Church.
