Hiller Byrum

Hiller Fahey Byrum Sr., 89, of Virginia Road, Edenton, died Sunday, September 13, 2009 in Chowan Hospital.
A native of Chowan County, he was past president of Byrum Farms, Inc. and the former co-owner and operator Lane-Byrum Corn Milling Co. He served for 35 years on the Chowan County Board of Soil Conservation and had received the Governor’s Award for that service, was the NC Cotton Grower of the Year in 1983, served on the Board of Directors for the Albemarle Cotton Growers Co-Op and served on the Chowan Hospital Board of Trustees. He was a member and deacon of Rocky Hock Baptist Church and its Carey Evans Sunday School class and served on the Board of Directors of the Center Hill-Cross Roads Fire Dept. since its formation.
Surviving are his wife, Rosa Mae Jones Pierce Byrum; two daughters, Kathryn Faye Byrum Harrell of Gatesville and Julia Wright Byrum Nixon of Tyner; a son, Hiller Fahey Byrum Jr. of Edenton; step-children, Sharon Pierce Hendricks of Cary and DeWitt Pierce of Hobbsville; eight grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 16 in Rocky Hock Baptist Church by Dr. James Horton. Burial was in Beaver Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends times at the home of his son, The Homeplace, 2243 Virginia Road, Edenton.
