Lady Eagles stop Lawrence

JACKSON – Northeast Academy claimed their first tennis victory of the season August 25.

The Lady Eagles claimed a 5-4 win over rival Lawrence Academy in a match that was hard-fought on both sides.

Northeast Academy won four of the six singles matchups and Lawrence won two of the three doubles’ contests.

At number one, Lawrence Academy’s Hallie Corbett defeated Kelsey Futrell 8-6, but Northeast bounced back when Taylor Cocke won 8-2 over Hayden Thompson in the battle of number twos.

In the third-seeded action, Kaylon Rose grabbed a perfect 8-0 win over McCaul Nelson and then Ashton Liverman gave the Lady Eagles back-to-back wins by topping Sarah Meggison 8-1.

Lawrence grabbed another win at number five when Bailey Nelson topped Haley Jones of Northeast 9-7.

Ivey Little grabbed the final singles win for Northeast by stopping Laura Baley 8-1.

In double action, Corbett and Thompson topped Futrell and Rose by a final count of 8-6 in the battle of the top teams.

Northeast sealed the win when Cocke and Liverman defeated Nelson and Nelson by a final of 8-1.

Meggison and Baley defeated Jones and Ashlynn Bridgers 9-8 in the third doubles action to establish the 5-4 final.

Northeast improved to 1-1 with the victory.
